My name is Thao Nguyen and I received my Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University. As a child, I would often ask the question “why”? Not in a defiant manner but from a genuine deep curiosity. Pondering it now, I can see how invaluable this one word became to my future journey.
In 2010, my father exhibited drug-induced hepatitis in addition to other chronic conditions. At that time, he was taking eight different medications and not knowing “why”. I reviewed the list of medications and researched the mechanism of action and its side effects. My goal was to wean him off the prescriptions that I felt confident I could replace safely with dietary and lifestyle modifications. Within six months, my father’s liver enzymes returned to normal and I safely eliminated six out of the eight medications. I witnessed first-hand what dietary/lifestyle changes can do, and if we allow our bodies the chance to heal, most of the time it will. He is now 85 years young, self-reliant, healthy, and thriving. This journey with my father led me to discover Naturopathic Medicine.
During my time at Bastyr, I completed additional training in visceral manipulation, kinesio taping, aromatherapy, foot reflexology, and environmental medicine. My undergraduate degree focused on nutrition. In 2015, I completed the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) from California State University, Los Angeles. At Zen Attitude Wellness, my focus is on nutrition, offering personalized visits that prioritize holistic health.
I approach nutrition and healing with an open mind, viewing the human body as an integral part of a larger ecosystem. My philosophy centers around simplicity: by addressing essential elements like sleep, nutrition, and daily movement, we can significantly improve the majority of chronic health conditions. I believe healing should be enjoyable and accessible, making the journey toward wellness both effective and fulfilling.
I feel strongly about the importance of a client/provider connection that fosters the feeling of safety, where clients feel valued, seen, and heard. It must be a good fit and in order to facilitate this, I offer a free 15-minute video consult with new clients.
When I am not in the clinic, you will find me exploring nature, bird watching, and experimenting in the kitchen—often with the company of my two cats.
When people ask me why I became a naturopathic doctor, I often reflect back to a defining moment in 2010. My father had been living with multiple chronic conditions and was taking eight different prescription medications. One day, he developed drug-induced hepatitis—a serious side effect that shook our family.
At the time, I wasn’t yet a doctor, but I had a deep curiosity and a foundational knowledge in nutrition. I remember sitting with his long list of medications, researching each one: What was it for? What were the side effects? Was there a better way?
That’s when I asked myself: Could we support his healing naturally?
With caution and care, I began to make small, intentional changes to his diet and lifestyle. Over the next six months, we focused on liver-supportive foods, daily movement, quality sleep, hydration, and emotional well-being. With close monitoring and collaboration, I was able to safely eliminate six of his eight medications. His liver enzymes returned to normal.
Today, he is 85 years young—self-reliant, healthy, and thriving.
That journey didn’t just change his life—it changed mine. It opened the door to naturopathic medicine and a lifelong passion for root-cause healing.
The body wants to heal – We just need to give it the right tools and environment.
Nutrition is powerful – Food can either burden or nourish the body.
Less can be more – Sometimes we need to simplify, not add more.
Relationships matter – Healing happens faster in safe, supportive spaces.
